Writing a Screenplay Treatment - HG Nadel

15 Oct 17 - 00:42

You aren't the only person out there that has asked themselves why they need to write a treatment. Wouldn't it be easier to just write the screenplay and send it out instead? You could certainly do that but without proper planning your screenplay will likely be improperly structured and filled with plot holes and one-dimensional characters. And with the treatment, writing the screenplay will be a much more enjoyable task that will yield far greater results.

You don't want to do anything to waste your time as a screenwriter. Time is all writers have and it's treasured. Writing a treatment will test your idea. You may think you have the most amazing idea, (and maybe you do) but then that idea falls flat on the ears of others. Why not test the idea first before you begin a huge project. If the treatment receives rave reviews then you are well on your way to getting your screenplay accepted. Big Hollywood execs won't usually spend their time reading a full draft if they don't already know they are interested in the story. A treatment will give them the tantalizing glimpse into your story that will entice them to read the full draft.

Professional screenplay writer HG Nadel says that writing a treatment forces you to get the fine details of your story down on paper, it allows you to fill those gaping holes you have in your story before you get in too deep. It's also a great marketing tool that you can pull out to answer any questions about your story.

Writing a treatment and passing it around also allows you to get valuable feedback from your peers. We all need a little of that when we get derailed in our own ideas. People are more willing to read a few pages of a treatment then they are when you ask them to read over your 100+ page screenplay. Gulp!

Maybe this idea came out of the smoky effects of a dream you had the night before. Now before you go writing 200 odd pages of the dream it's better to use a treatment to flesh out whether your idea is realistic and feasible to sell to a producer. That's where a treatment becomes perfect because you can test your idea before committing far more time writing an entire screenplay that just doesn't work.

Writing a treatment begins with an idea. But without the help of other screenwriters and professionals for hire, many screenwriters never get their ideas fully developed. Feedback and input can work wonders for developing your treatment and screenplay
