Screen Writers - The Script Writing Basics by HG Nadel

04 Oct 17 - 02:30

All screen writers should know the script writing basics if they want to be successful in this creative but harsh career. Numerous screen writers write amazing scripts, but nobody in the film industry wants to read their scripts because they are either too long or they don't respect the format of a script. These are two of the main reasons why so many writers meet rejection despite the fact they are extremely intelligent and talented. What they refuse to do is to admit the fact that it is extremely important to respect a format if you want your script looked at in this industry. If this is what you want to do in the future, then you must respect the rules.

Formatting

All screen writers have to understand the fact that when a script is being written for the screen, it has some formatting and storytelling protocols to respect. The script can't be written in any format that seems right to you. If you try that approach you'll quickly find the movie director will immediately reject it or simply ignore it. This format includes margins in which notes can be made to clarify the details and dialogue for the characters. In order to create these margins correctly, it is recommended you download special software available on the Internet. Professional screen writers use the software, as it simplifies their work and helps them gain save time in the long run. The software offers an easy access to the format movie directors accept.

Length of Script Makes a Difference

Avoid making your script too long as this will also reduce the chance a movie director will look at it. There are hundreds, even thousands of people just like you out there, trying to become screen writers, and all of them send scripts. With the volume of scripts pouring in each day, there is no time for the director to read all of them. He or she will ignore those that are too long. An average script length is of 120 pages. Keep this in mind; one script page is generally one minute of film. If you want to write a script for a 90 minutes movie, and then make sure your script does not have more than 90 pages. The first ten pages are the most important, as they unveil future action. Numerous movie directors don't even bother to read entire. Many read the first 10 pages instead, and if they like them, they continue reading the script. If they don't, they throw the script into the rejection heap.

As you can see, screen writers have a difficult job to do, especially if they want to become famous. If you want to become one, prepare yourself for a lot of hard work.
