Getting Ideas for Your Fiction Story by HG Nadel

21 Sep 17 - 05:15

If you are a writer of fiction, you have almost certainly encountered writers block. For many would be writers, there are few things more depressing than staring at a blank page and trying to get a glimmer of an idea. But, in reality, ideas of things to write about are all around you. You simply have to pay attention to your surroundings.

HG Nadel suggests that one of the best places to look for ideas is your own life story. Even the author who lives the most boring of lives will have certain things that they have experienced that can be the springboard for the outlines of a novel. In fact, since your personal stories are the ones that you are most familiar with, these are the ones that will help to bring more than a touch of authenticity to their stories.

Many writers are somewhat hesitant to take events from their personal life in writing fiction for fear that readers may think that it is autobiographical. But, if you succumb to this fear, you will never be a writer and probably never get past your writers block. In fact, if you have done a good job, few readers are even thinking about the writer while reading a book.

Another source of good ideas is other books. As long as you don't plagiarize, there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking inspiration or ideas from another book or short story. The basic plots of many of Shakespeare's plays have been re-imagined and re-written hundreds of time over the centuries. In fact, the main plot lines from the majority of his plays were themselves taken from prior works of other authors. His great talent was in more artfully adapting the stories as well as providing fantastic dialogue for his characters to speak. No matter what type of fiction you are writing, it is very easy to take an existing novel that you like and come up with your own unique take on it.

One very useful habit that you can begin to develop is to start to keep a journal of interesting things that you see or hear about each day. These things can be ones that you have seen in person, on TV, or even on video. And, maybe even more importantly, take note of bits of dialogue that you hear as you go through your day. Many times, the most mundane plot can be made interesting simply by the expert use of dialogue. Make keeping a journal a habit and you will never run out of ideas.
